Teachers provide a learning environment where children are supported, loved, and valued for who they are and who they can become through experience and guidance from their teachers and classmates. We prepare an environment where children can develop at their own rate, enjoying every moment of discovery along the way. By allowing them to explore their world with hands-on experiences and exploration, their senses are fulfilled and completely supported. Children seek to meet their academic, social, emotional, and physical needs through work and play within a classroom community. Our experienced staff brings many talents to our program, including art, music and movement, cooking, and outdoor education.Teachers follow each child in learning, observing and guiding them to higher abstract levels of understanding themselves and their important work ahead as citizens of the world.
Lower Elementary (1st-3rd year)- The Maple Classroom
Upper Elementary (4th-6th year)- The Sequoia Classroom
... the student is ripe for the bigger concepts, more abstract thinking, and greater connection of ideas that this plane of development invites. The role of the teacher is to strike the imagination...and bring the child into this new world of learning.
The Elementary Program offers individualized instruction and discussion-oriented lessons, covering math, language, botany, zoology, geography and history. Children develop a solid mastery of material in these core areas. Physical education, fine arts, music and Spanish are also important aspects of the curriculum.
The development of concentration and time management empowers each child with a sense of responsibility for his own learning. The multi-age classrooms (1st through 3rd and 4th through 6th) allow students to serve as tutors and role models for one another, reinforcing both academic and social skills.
The sense of community and self-esteem flourish as students care for their environment and work together to establish rules to solve group and individual problems. These experiences are all stepping stones toward developing an understanding of and responsibility toward the local and world communities. Upon graduation from the Elementary Program, Sunrise students easily make the transition to middle school. Proudly, confidently, they step out into the world with the skills and desire to learn, make good choices and contribute positively throughout their lives.
