2016-2017 School Year
Elementary Orientation Letter
We hope that you are having a wonderful summer with your children. The following information will help us get off to a great start when the school year begins.
Please label all of your child’s outerwear. Similar to most local schools, we feel that students should dress in a manner that is school appropriate and, particularly for the elementary students, sets a standard of appearance that is conducive to learning, concentration and respect among classmates. Action figures and scary or violent images are not allowed. Shoes should support and protect feet for daily running and outdoor play. Platform, backless and high heel shoes are not appropriate. Shirts should cover the midriff area and no halter or spaghetti strap tops may be worn to school. Pants should not sag, hang low on hips, or show underwear. Shorts should be of a modest, long length.
Sketchpads and journals will be provided at school. Due to limited space, please do not send your child with a backpack.
Your child’s lunch box should be labeled. We are unable to refrigerate or heat the students’ lunches, so we recommend a thermos for hot lunches and ice packs for those items that need to remain cool. Sunrise encourages healthy nutrition and prefers that the children have lunches without sugary and/or artificial items. Please no soda or glass containers of any kind. Class and birthday snacks should be nutritious and natural, too. More information about our nutrition policy can be found in your Parent Handbook. Please inform your child’s teacher of any food allergies. Sunrise Montessori is a nut free school.
Class work starts as soon as the children arrive, so it is essential that students are here at 8:30am to take advantage of the whole Elementary curriculum. Please help your child to be consistently on time. This is very helpful in setting a good example regarding respect, punctuality, and the importance of school.
Consistent attendance at school is very important in each class level. Family vacations during regular school session are strongly discouraged, especially at the elementary stage. Your child will be missing valuable lessons, field trips or special cultural days that cannot be rescheduled or easily made up. This is very disappointing for your child as well as for the teachers who have prepared group lessons based on the full participation of each student.
Please keep your child at home if they have a fever, diarrhea, green mucus, or are vomiting. They must be fever free (without the use of fever-reducing medication such as Tylenol) for 24 hours before returning to school. Children who are sick will be isolated and the parents will be called to pick up the child. Please notify the school office as soon as possible if your child is going to be absent and the reason for the absence, particularly if the illness is communicable or contagious disease.
Medications are only allowed at school when absolutely necessary. All medicines must have their original labels and complete instructions as to use. Please give the medication directly to your child’s teacher.
We encourage parental participation in our class. The following are some examples of how we can begin to utilize your energy and enthusiasm. There will be sign-up sheets for these positions during the first week of school. Please note that parent volunteers who work in the classroom with the children or drive on field trips are required to provide proof of a negative TB test and a statement of good health.
- Room Parents: These volunteers sign up for a given month to help with parties, wash a small basket of laundry and prepare a snack for one day each week of that month.
- Field Trip Drivers: To drive on trips away from school, please request the required field trip driver paperwork from the office.
- Help with Continent Trip: We need volunteers to help with cooking, room set-up, etc.
We are excited about the new school year and look forward to seeing you at Orientation on August 30th!
