Toddler Orientation Information

Dear Toddler Parents,

Welcome to the Sunrise Bonsai class. Suzanne and I are very excited about the new school year and look forward to partnering with you in your child’s first school experience.  Together our goals for the year include:

  • Foster independence and self-confidence
  • Begin to form relationships with peers and learn to follow social guidelines
  • Encourage respect for others and the classroom environment

The following information will help us have a great start:

We will begin the year with an open house to help you and your child explore the classroom activities; feel comfortable with the class environment and have an opportunity to meet other classmates and us! More information for this event will be coming soon.

Open house is on Thursday, August 25th for Tues/Thurs class & Friday, August 26th for the Mon/Weds/Fri class from 4:30 to 5:45pm

In order to help the children transition easily, our Bonsai toddlers will have a shortened First Week of School.

Our first day is on Tuesday, August 30th & Wednesday, August 31st.  All school days during the first week will be from 9 to 11am

Regular class times (9-12) will begin on Tuesday, September 6th

School Supplies

Please bring a complete set of extra clothes including a top, a bottom (short, pants or skirt) and socks. If your child is in diapers, please bring 5 diapers or pull ups. We will let you know when we need more. Please be sure to label all clothing and diapers.

Also, bring three photos of your child with your child’s head approximately 2 x 2 inches in diameter for their cubby and other things that need to be labeled and easily identified by your child. Also, we will need a photo of your family (4x6 in) to keep in our class for your child to refer to in case he/she needs it for comfort.

Parents are asked to sign up to bring snack once a month. There will be a calendar/sign- up for each month by the parents’ file at the beginning of the month. (Sunrise is a NUT FREE school. Please refer to your Parent Handbook.)

If your child has any food allergies, please let us know so we can make special arrangements.

Morning Arrival

Upon arrival, you and your child will be greeted by one of us at the door. Please sign your child in when arriving and out when leaving, using your full last name, in the binder located by the front door.

We would like to work as a team with you to help your child transition smoothly into the classroom. When dropping your child off, please keep your goodbyes short and sweet to help your child transition easily. A quick reassurance that you will be coming back soon and that he or she will have a great day is all your child needs if you see that he or she is happily entering the classroom. However, if you see that he is hesitant, you may help him by engaging him in an activity, then say good bye with a smile and leave. If your child is having a hard time, we may let you know how he/she is doing within a few minutes and you can always call the office to check on your child. We will always call you if your child is not able to get comfortable that day.

If your child is going to be picked up by someone other than you, please let us and your child know. If this person is not listed on your child’s emergency card, please sign a permission slip and let them know that an ID will be required before we can release your child. Please, make any necessary changes on your emergency card as school progresses.

Our Class Schedule:

9:00 to 9:15     Arrival

9:15 to 10:30   Work time including individual choice of work and socializing

10:30 to 11:00 Group snack (sign up will be available on the first day of school)

11:10 to 11:30 Circle (students sing, dance, learn about calendar and weather, group story)

11:30 to 12:00 Outside play and dismissal

Once a week, on Wednesdays, our music teacher, Shauna Joseph, will come to teach our toddlers about singing, rhythm and movement.

Parents can visit anytime; however, we prefer to wait several weeks to settle into our classroom routine before welcoming visitors. Parents may be asked to support us on special occasions or to help us with gardening.

Special Celebrations

You are welcome to come in to celebrate your child on the week of their birthday. We have a little ceremony to make your child’s day special. A picture of each year of your child’s life and a healthy snack are the perfect addition to celebrate such an important occasion. Please, make arrangements in advance with Dinora.

We will have a few school-wide celebrations throughout the year. There will be a Halloween Party, Harvest Feast, Winter Party, and End of the Year Party. There will also be other special days in which toddlers will partake that will be announced as the year progresses.

Please let us know if anything different is going on in your child’s life, such as changes in bathroom routine, changes at home, a new baby, etc. Often these changes can make an impact in a child’s school day.

We would like to be available to talk or answer questions at any time, but sometimes drop off and pick up can be busy. Please, feel free to hand me a written note or email me at

I will hold conferences in October for all the Toddler families. During this conference we will share our goals for the school year, talk about your toddler’s adjustment to the class and any concerns we might have. Also, you will receive an end of the year progress report in May. In the meantime, if you would like to sit down with me to discuss your child, do not hesitate to set up a time.

We are very happy to be working with you and your child and look forward to meeting you at the open house!
