Montessori and Sunrise

Sunrise Montessori of Napa Valley follows the pedagogy created by Maria Montessori.  Dr. Montessori (1870-1952) was born in Italy, and attended University of Rome, where she became a doctor of medicine.  Her work with disabled, ill, and mentally handicapped children, lead to her development of the Montessori Method.  She recognized children acquire knowledge through all of their senses, and so materials were made to cater to this new way of thinking.  Sounds were taught with visual, tactile, and verbal cues, allowing young children to take in a lesson as a whole body experience instead of drill and memorization.  Dr. Montessori also developed  curriculums to address the whole child, not solely academics.  Practical life skills, peace education, the arts, and community responsibility all have a very special place in her philosophy.

Today, the Montessori Method is a highly valued and important educational tool.  At Sunrise, we create an individual experience for every child, allowing their needs and sensitive periods to be supported.  Each classroom at Sunrise allows the children to become independent learners, encourages responsibility, and inspires the desire for knowledge.
